Born out of frustration, On Demand Law Office is project that is a long time coming. For the last nine years, Brandon Osterbind and Mike Lovell have toiled away in two very different places. Each place had its pro’s and each had its cons. From one extreme to the other, Mike and Brandon suffered and enjoyed the greatest pains and the greatest joys the practice of law had to offer. Each story is different, but each story is the same.
Brandon graduated first in his class from law school and clerked with William G. Petty on the Court of Appeals of Virginia before he began practicing law with a small rural general litigation and personal injury law firm. When Brandon started practicing, he had a 5 star paralegal who was more than competent at her job. All of that was good, except her interpersonal skills were lacking. After five years of good work product but daily drama, Brandon had to let his paralegal go. Brandon would tell you that this is one of the most difficult decisions he has ever had to make. Then, legal hacking became real for Brandon.
Mike graduated from law school at started practicing law with an older lawyer in Central Virginia. The arrangement was more of an office sharing one as opposed to a partnership but he had the ability to discuss cases with his office mate to help figure out what to do. During the first seven years of Mike’s practice, he struggled to find a competent paralegal. Mike had to figure a lot of things out on his own including postage, form letters, pleadings, etc. Mike had to learn the hard way how to practice law without any help from a competent paralegal.
These experiences shared by Brandon and Mike are not unique to their practices because everyone has their own story. You have your story that is probably similar to one of the stories above. What struggles have you experienced along the way? What have you done to combat burn out and intellectual fatigue?
We have all learned to cope in some way, shape, or form. This website is intended to share strategies used by Brandon and Mike to deal with those issues that you see daily in the practice of law. How can we practice law better in such a way that leaves us fulfilled at the end of the day? That is what we are all about.
Let’s do this together.
